A new trend within the web seems to be the creation of satirical facts belonging to people representing special stereotypes. They tend to involve absurdly exaggerated claims about the stereotype they are mapped to.

The first facts I noticed are the ones about Chuck Norris, representing toughness, virility and heroic behaviour. Unfortunately, the website Chuck Norris Facts is down right now, so I will list my favourite facts here:

Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.
Chuck Norris doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.
There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.
Chuck Norris counted to infinity. Twice.
Chuck Norris once visited the Virgin Islands. They are now The Islands.
Chuck Norris doesn't play "hide-and-seek." He plays "hide-and-pray-I-don't-find-you."
When God said "Let there be light", Chuck Norris said: "say please."
Chuck Norris can delete the Recycling Bin.

Second I have to mention the ones about Bruce Schneier (computer scientists, and especially these who are interested in cryptography und computer security know him -- the other ones will get known to him by reading his monthly newsletter). My favourite ones of the Bruce Schneier facts are:

When Bruce Schneier observes a quantum particle, it remains in the same state until he has finished observing it.
Bruce Schneier knows Alice and Bob's shared secret.
Bruce Schneier knows the state of schroedinger's cat.
Bruce Schneier can log into any computer just by staring down the prompt.
Bruce Schneier's secure handshake is so strong, you won't be able to exchange keys with anyone else for days.
Bruce Schneier writes his books and essays by generating random alphanumeric text of an appropriate length and then decrypting it.
Bruce Schneier has built a non-deterministic Turing machine, so he doesn't care whether P=NP.
When Bruce Schneier uses double ROT13 encryption, the ciphertext is totally unbreakable.
Bruce Schneier doesn't need to hide data with steganography - data hides from Bruce Schneier.

StudiVZ-Blog gehackt

Manchmal bin ich sehr froh, die verschiedenen Blogs, die ich verfolge, über einen Newsreader lesen zu können, anstatt regelmäßig auf die ewig vielen Seiten zu schauen und dabei merken zu müssen, dass sich (wie es in diesem Blog auch häufig der Fall ist) schon wieder nichts getan hat. Mein Lieblingsnewsreader, aKregator, ruft die RSS-Feeds der eingetragenen Blogs in regelmäßigen zeitlichen Abständen ab und sagt mir dann, wenn es irgendwo einen neuen Eintrag gibt. Das fühlt sich dann ein wenig so an, als ob man sein Postfach auf neue Mails checkt.

Heute nacht fand ich einen Eintrag im Feed des StudiVZ-Blogs, der sowohl sprachlich als auch inhaltlich nicht von den StudiVZ-Betreibern stammen kann. Das Blog selbst war zu dem Zeitbunkt mit einer dieser geliebten "Ene mene meck"-Meldungen nicht mehr erreichbar, und heute wird der Besucher von der URL des Blogs direkt auf die Startseite des StudiVZ selbst umgeleitet. Da ist wohl (dem Chaos Computer Club?) ein kleiner Hack gelungen. Und die Informationspolitik des StudiVZ scheint sich auch nach der Übernahme durch Holtzbrinck nicht geändert zu haben.

Der Nachwelt sei hier die Botschaft des CCC im StudiVZ-Blog vor dessen Abschaltung noch einmal zitiert:

Der neue offizielle Eigentümer euer persönlichen Daten, Konstantin Urban von Holzbrinck Networks, scheint genauso wenig vom Thema Sicherheit zu verstehen, wie die Simulanten denen ihr bisher schon zu viele Details über euch anvertraut habt: gar nichts. So behauptet er dummdreist, der Chaos Computer Club hätte “vergeblich versucht das System zu hacken” und deswegen sei nun alles total sicher. Wörtlich behauptet Konstantin Urban im "manager magazin":

"Selbstverständlich musste man nachrüsten, und das hat StudiVZ getan. Die Datensicherheit ist jetzt gegeben. Unlängst hat der Chaos Computer Club vergebens versucht, sich ins System zu hacken. Auch die Seite ist jetzt stabil."

Das ist leider komplett falsch.

Der Chaos Computer Club beteiligt sich nicht an solchen "Hackt uns doch"-Mätzchen wie den von studiVZ ausgerufenen Wettbewerb. Es kommt leider vor, dass einzelne Spinner von sich behaupten “im Namen des CCC” zu handeln, wie wohl auch hier geschehen. Mit dem Chaos Computer Club hat das jedoch nichts zu tun.

Der Chaos Computer Club beschäftigt sich gerade mit wichtigeren Dingen, z.B. dem Vertrauensverlust durch Wahlcomputer, den Gefahren von biometrische Reisepässen und dem Kampf gegen die Totalüberwachung durch die sogenannte Vorratsdatenspeicherung. Vielleicht habt ihr ja auch besseres zu tun, als eure Daten freiwillig in den Rachen einer gewinnorientierten Verwertungsgesellschaft zu kippen und kümmert Euch mal um Euer Leben, die Welt da draußen und die wirklichen Probleme der Menschheit.

...als Sprache hab ich ja schon lange über. Aber Artikel wie dieser hier bestärken einen dann doch noch in dieser Ansicht. Es wird Zeit, dass PHP von den Servern verschwindet.

GEZ again

Some months ago I blogged about the engaging payment of a fee (GEZ) for having a computer with access to the internet. I've got the feeling that at least some polititians in Germany will change their mind on that fee, especially since taking the initiative by the members of the christian democratic party.

On monday I read an article of golem.de, which reports Harry Carstensen, the prime minister of Schleswig-Holstein, to argue against these obscure GEZ fees, too. But the only argument he contributes to the ongoing discussion is the fact, that the public broadcasting services still don't offer their whole program via stream.

Hence, of course, the fees would be ok, if ARD, ZDF and the other ones provided all their stuff on the net . I still miss the point I mentioned in my last blog entry on this topic: what, if I don't want to see all their fucking stuff? If they're afraid I could watch their content, they shall stop providing it on the net!

Food via Amazon

...there must have been a point in time (I didn't notice it), when Amazon started to expand their eBusiness range on several kinds of drinking and food, as you can see on their english homepage, choosing the category Gourmet Food.

Wanna buy some milk, for instance?
Bananas, apples or peaches?
Iceberg lettuce, tomatoes or onions?

Have a look on the sections Customers who bought this item also bought as well as Product Features on each product page... a little curious to see marketing concepts working for books and other anorganic stuff applied on food.
I would really like to know, if somebody ordered some food via Amazon already, and how it looked like, especially the fresh goods. Five minutes ago, I tried to order two pounds of cheese. But, as I presumed, I couldn't get one. The site tells me:

*** We're sorry. The item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping adress or delete the item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the update button. ***

Das ist manchmal ganz lustig, sollte aber nicht hochsterilisiert werden. Schlimmer sind sachliche Schnitzer, die auf mangelnder Vorbereitung beruhen.

User-Interfaces: OPAC and Amazon

A nice example how not to design user interfaces is OPAC, an online search engine used by university libraries. Lots of students and post-graduates are dissatisfied because of getting results matching to their request in a syntactical manner, but not being able to get the books and publications having the content they really need. What would have happened, if Amazon came along with such an interface?
David Walker, web development librarian at the Cal State San Marcos , implemented a look-alike frontend using Web-Service technology to get the book metadata from Amazon. Enjoy.

Zwanghaftes Fernsehen

First of all, read http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/technologie/0,1518,411910,00.html. Then go on reading this article.

In dem Artikel heißt es:

Die Anbieter hätten ein Interesse, dass bezahlte Werbeclips auch wahrgenommen würden, schließlich sei das ja ihre Haupteinnahmequelle.

Und wenn das so weitergeht, dann hat der Zuschauer überhaupt kein Interesse mehr daran, überhaupt noch irgendwas (die verrückten Fußballfans mal ausgenommen, aber dafür gibt's ja Pay-TV) wahrzunehmen. Mir zumindestens reicht's schon lange, vom Fernsehen als Medium habe ich mich verabschiedet. Ich habe kein Interesse daran, beim Schauen eines Films alle 20 Minuten zu erfahren, welche Suppe am leckersten schmeckt, welches Waschmittel die bunten Farben aus meinen Hemden entfernt und welches Deo ich benutzen muss, damit die Frauenwelt mir zu Füßen liegt.
